Modern digital radio sets (DMR)
In spite of all the advantages of modern mobile phones, there are still many areas in which it remains more advantageous to use radio sets for communication. These sets are probably most familiar to us as used by the emergency services (fire fighters, emergency medical services), the police and security services, and in road and rail transport (city transport, taxis, trucks). Other areas in which there are good reasons for using radio sets include building site management, industrial and assembly concerns, agriculture and forestry. The principal advantages of radio are its independence of mobile operators (charges, network failures), easy operation (even when wearing gloves), and the immediate connection of multiple users at the same time by pressing a single button. Thanks to standard handsfree sets and high volume, radio can also be suitable in open spaces (construction sites, industrial concerns) and means of transport, and means the user has his or her hands free when receiving transmissions.
The whole world is going digital, and leading manufacturers of professional radio sets are also continuing to improve their properties in order to take advantage of all the possibilities offered by digital technology to increase operating convenience for users and managerial staff. Digital mobile radio (DMR) is an open standard for professional digital radio sets specified by a standard issued by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI). This standard is used for products sold all over the world.
The difference in the quality and functions of analogue and DMR radio sets is similar to the difference between analogue and digital television. A call in a DMR radio network is transmitted in digital form similarly to, for example, a GSM telephone.
