BMW will celebrate 40 years of the legendary GS series this year

This year, BMW will celebrate 40 years of the legendary GS series
This year, the BMW Motorcycle Division has prepared a season full of references to its history for its fans. This year will take place in the name of the 40th anniversary of the GS enduro series and also the classic retro model R 18 with the largest boxer ever made. It wants to target a wider range of customers with new nine hundreds at a favorable price, and for demanding travelers it comes with an innovated R1250 RT series.
40 years of adventure under the acronym GS
It's unbelievable, but the popular touring enduro and flagship model of the BMW Motorrad brand has been celebrating for 40 years. In 1980, the R 80 G / S was introduced, then still with a slash in the name, which meant Gelände / Strasse (off-road / street). The slash has disappeared over time and GS has meant Galände Sport ever since. On the occasion of the anniversary of its most important motorcycle, the brand introduced 7 motorcycles in a special yellow-black design, referring to the iconic colors of the R 100 GS model. They are G 310 GS, F 750 GS, F 850 GS, F 850 GS Adventure, R nineT Urban GS and of course the classic large enduro R 1250 GS and R 1250 GS Adventure. The wide range of models thus gives great choice to a variety of riders.
Start with Bavarian
The brand proves that a wide range of clients can afford a BMW motorcycle by offering new nine hundreds at a great price with the possibility of advantageous financing. It is a typical naked roadster BMW F 900 R and its hooded sibling BMW F 900 XR. The basis of both is an agile in-line two-cylinder with an output of 105 hp, but it is also possible to order versions for A2 drivers with an output of up to 35 kW from the production. But what is most interesting about both is undoubtedly the price. The F 900 R starts at CZK 224,800 and its hooded sister starts at CZK 282,800. For both, it is possible to set flexible financing with different loan duration and different down payment. For example, naked dogs can be obtained for CZK 3,499 per month, including insurance and a five-year factory warranty.
Both models set the technological benchmark in the mid-range segment with a wide range of standard equipment, including standard connectivity and LED lights, while offering a range of optional features. These are in some cases unique within the segment. These include adaptive cornering lights, keyless access, Dynamic ESA suspension or optional Pro driving modes. In addition to the standard anti-hopping clutch, the new F 900 R and F 900 XR can be equipped with a torque control system (MSR) for the first time. This prevents the rear wheel from locking in the event of a sudden release of throttle or careless downshifting. This significantly increases the level of security.
New RT
The icon in the BMW R 1250 RT class of touring motorcycles comes properly innovated this year. The motorcycle is still powered by a two-cylinder boxer engine with variable timing and stroke of the intake valves. The engine runs extremely smoothly, quietly and economically, yet still offers more than a sufficient 136 horsepower even in the current EU5 emission standard.
The new R 1250 RT can be equipped from the factory with optional driving modes, including dynamic braking. As standard, the motorcycle has an integral braking system with ABS, which uses a handbrake lever to activate the front and rear brakes at the same time, and in the braking intensity also takes into account the angle of inclination of the motorcycle and the dynamic distribution of braking force. A new adaptive cruise control is part of the optional equipment. Thanks to radar sensors, the system controls the speed of the motorcycle according to the vehicle in front. At the same time, it also deals with the angle of inclination and thus enables safe turning.
At first glance, the motorcycle is fascinated by the new front grille with large full-LED headlights. An optional new headlight with swivel function changes the shape of the standard LED lights depending on the inclination of the motorcycle. It perfectly illuminates corners and the light cone points where the motorcycle is going. The big shift is the new 0.25 ”color TFT display with integrated navigation for convenient route planning and extensive connectivity as standard.
R18 Classic
After the introduction of the new R 18 last year, BMW is coming up with the second representative of this model line for the cruiser segment. The new BMW R 18 Classic is a nostalgic touring motorcycle referring to the beginnings of large touring machines. While the R 18 relies on a very purist style, the R 18 Classic features a large windshield, passenger seat, side bags, LED auxiliary headlights and a 16-inch front wheel.
The heart of both machines is the newly developed two-cylinder "Big Boxer" engine. Its impressive appearance and technology are a continuation of the traditional air-cooled engines with opposed cylinders from the time when BMW Motorrad began production in 1923. The largest series-produced two-cylinder boxer has a displacement of 1802 cc and a maximum output of 91 hp. Between 2000 and 4000 rpm, a huge torque in excess of 150 Nm is always available. The R 18 Classic and R 18 are a direct continuation of the tradition of historic BMW motorcycles and offer the best that the brand has created over the last 100 years.
